It seems that I only write in this blog to talk about friends, but in this case, it is different because I am gonna talk about The Angles. Rafa Romero (frontman of The Angles) and I have been friends for more than 10 years, but it only affects in I've been one of the few lucky men who had access to master recordings ahead of time .
About a month ago Rafa contacted me, (He is a friend and former colleague (and former college classmate, though we haven't spent a lot of time together in class... too much rock n roll) to announce that today (April 29) will be the release of the new single "Black Rhino" from his band the Angles.
Rafa sent me a dropbox link containing the Masters of the single and the B-side... , I had heard Rafa's music repeatedly and I have to swear to God that the sound of this new band surprised me so pleasantly.
Rafa's style has always been very brit-rock descending directly from Oasis (see past article) and when I heard The Angles' single I did not recognize that specific sound.
I heard an alternative rock very Artic Monkeys without Alex Turner's pedantry, some indie-garage touch like Black Motorcycle Rebel Club, a little Kasabain's phyc, and catchy tunes similar to The Kooks' ones ... but I even heard the bass (as I have said before, I'm a fan of Grant's bass) and many drum beats that sounds so funk, they were very Red Hot .. and I do not why, probably because Rafa's voice sounds punchy or because the lyrics are direct and raw but they even reminded me of Jane's Addiction (its weird, i know).
This mix is the reason I like the new The Angles' single and i want to be the first (or one of the first articles of this new release)
The last time I wrote about Rafa's band, I suggested some improvement points and I recommended some things ... in this case, I can't. I consider The Angles is a complete and formed band with an original sound and musical quality (and a great potential), i think that the second guitar liberates Rafa a lot and honestly he has very interesting riffs, and additionally the new drummer gives a very interesting sound away from the conventional rock.
In the end, Rafa also let me listen to the b-side All the fun of the affair, and I will not say too much about it because you can't hear it right now ... but it is much more funky than Black Rhino and in my opinion, it is much more "harder" and more fun.
I include a gift for you, an exclusive for "loquemesalgadelaolla" blog .... handwritten lyrics of both songs
